THE EGLAF ARTS TEAM

Our key objectives are conceptualised around advocacy and promotion of the arts and our artists, whilst striving for optimal audience engagement by means of interdisciplinary collaboration.  We aspire to take a leading role in scholarly and professional research and debate in the arts and share knowledge broadly within the arts sector and the community.  This includes creating quality, informative and insightful content that explore the thinking and working process of the artists.  EGLAF Arts Collective is building a team of passionate and professional art writers, curators, historians, bloggers and arts enthusiasts to assists us in this collaborative venture.

Elzandré Ayres vd Walt

Founder and Curator

Founder and Curator of EGLAF Arts Collective, Elzandré Ayres vd Walt is a South African arts project manager, artist and part time arts lecturer.  She completed her Honours Degree in Art History at the North-West University (NWU), Potchefstroom Campus in 2013.  Here she worked as locum arts lecturer at the School for Communication studies, Faculty of the Arts and Faculty of Education. She has been actively involved in the arts sphere and has also worked as ad hoc assistant and later assistant curator at the NWU Gallery (2013- 2016), operational manager of the Aardklop Visual Arts programme (2015 and 2016) and gallery agent at Turbine Art Fair (2015 and 2016).  

Karien Smal

Art Director

Karien Smal is a lover of oddities, antiques and all things strange and alluring, especially when it comes to art and human expression. She completed her honours in Art History in 2017 and is currently studying as a PGCE student at the North-West University (NWU), Potchefstroom campus, majoring in English and Art. She has taken part in the art world through internships at Lizamore & Associates and she is also an Ad Hoc for the NWU Gallery.  She has a passion for art and enlightening individuals that art can’t be classified by only painting, drawing & sculpture. Art is all around you, if only you are willing to see it.

Charika Swanepoel

Editor-in-Chief

Charika Swanepoel is a South African poet and literary scholar.  She is completing her MA. in English Poetry at the North-West University. Her creative work work has appeared on platforms such as the Kalahari Review, New Contrast, Prufrock, Aerodrome, Literator, Glass Poetry etc. She also edits for Siblini Journal and is reader at Helen Magazine and Frontier Poetry.

Mel Cokayne

International Liason

Mel Cokayne is a South African born art writer and food blogger currently based in Spain, where she spends most her time teaching English in a dynamic environment.  Having fallen in love with art as a student at the North-West University, Potchefstroom in 2010, Mel went on to complete and Honours degree in Art History after obtaining a BA degree in Communication in 2013.  After working as gallery assistant at the NWU Botanical Garden Gallery, she set off, living abroad in Bristol (UK), Amsterdam and now Spain, honing her interest in art and food alike, expressed through creative writing and blogging.

Esmé Wentzel

Curatorial Assistant

Esmé Wentzel is a young passionate creative working towards completing a BA
Communication degree at the North-West University, specializing in Art History. After studying BSc Zoology and Microbiology for two
years, she came to realize that her passion does not lie in science. She now looks forward to meeting artists and learning about the industry.

Elrisa Taljaard

Sales and Marketing Assistant

Elrisa Taljaard is currently studying Chemical Engineering at the North-West University, Potchefstroom campus.  Her diverse past times include competitive gaming, community outreach and support, collecting anything elephant an all round promotion of the arts.
